Sancocho
Quisqueya Family Restaurant at 921 W Veterans Memorial Blvd in Killeen, Texas has quickly become one of Central Texas's most celebrated Dominican restaurants since opening in 2021. Owner David founded the restaurant to share family recipes passed down through generations in the Dominican Republic, and the community response has been enthusiastic — earning Top Eats recognition on Uber Eats and five-star reviews from diners who grew up eating Dominican food in New York and Santo Domingo.
Every plate arrives with rice, beans, and salad, with tostones or sweet plantains available as an add-on. Signature dishes include slow-braised oxtails resting in deep, aromatic sauce; mofongo — mashed plantains with garlic and pork cracklings; sancocho, the hearty Dominican stew; mangu (mashed green plantains); stewed chicken; arroz con gandules; and crispy empanadas. To drink, the passion fruit juice and the morir soñando (orange juice and milk blended to silky sweetness) are must-orders. The menu rotates daily specials.
The dining room is small but warm, with Caribbean music overhead and an owner who greets first-timers personally. Open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, and Sunday for brunch hours. A genuine piece of Dominican hospitality in the heart of Texas.
